ISFAHAN - Zob Ahan thrashed Rah Ahan 5-2 on aggregate to clinch the Iran Hazfi Cup on Friday which saw Sepahan earn the fourth and final spot in the next year’s AFC Champions League.
Hazfi Cup winners qualify for the AFC Champions League but Sepahan, who finished fourth in the league, earned the berth because Zob Ahan have already qualified for the next continental championship by finishing among the top three in the league along with champions Esteghlal and third-placed Mes.
The Iran Pro League runners-up, who lost the first leg of the final away 1-0, beat the Tehran-based side 5-1 at home earn their first domestic silverware this season.
Mansour Ebrahimzadeh’s charges, who had lost the Iran League crown to Esteghlal on goal difference after going down to Foolad 4-1 on the final day, were on song in the second leg.
Shahin Kheiri put Zob Ahan ahead in the 18th minute and Esmaeil Farhadi doubled the advantage in the 31st minute.
Mojtaba Zarei pulled one back for Rah Ahan seven minutes before the breather but Zob Ahan continued their dominance after the restart.
Ghasem Haddadifar added two in the 47th and 90th minutes while Mostafa Salehinejad netted their fifth in the stoppage time.
